The Afghan Whigs

There are relatively few groups I miss from the 1990's but this one still makes me sad they split even though their output became somewhat weaker and more diluted toward the end of that decade. This is them performing at the peak of their powers and they still send shivers down my spine because they had it pure and simple. Particularly like the little dance step that Rick McCollum (lead guitar) does with his Fender Jazzmaster (cheers Nick ;). Marvel at the stony-faced composure of John Curley (bass) as around him the self loathing and charismatic frontman Greg Dulli luxuriates centre stage like a barely controlled cyclone. One of the most severely underrated bands of their generation, I'd advise you to watch this and then go out and buy Gentlemen (1993) forthwith. Listen and tremble.

Trainspotter comment = McCollum is playing a Fender Jazzmaster (much wider, white "soapbar" pickups than the Jaguar), but other than that, very similar indeed to the Jaguar.

Have you see the clip of them doing DEBONAIR on The Word? They went to adverts before the song had finished (bastards) but that performance really makes the hair stand up on my neck. Love the atmosphere they created... menacing soulfulness.

actually, The Word clip is very similar to the DEBONAIR clip you've posted. McCollum's playing a Jazzmaster in each clip. Love that pink Jazzmaster (and his dance moves). His guitar strap is so low!

I heard McCollum's new band, and it was a bit shit. I think Dulli was the soulful menace, and McCollum complemented it superbly.

btw. have you heard UP IN IT yet? (their first album)

Yeah they do look similar. Better edit that, thanks Nick. :)

Yeah, you did me a VHS tape with that performance on it. Amazing, very similar to the Conan O'Brien one but The Word one has the edge in my opinon. Unfortunately it was up on Youtube for a while but they took it down :( So couldn't use it but this is a good alternative though. It was second intro to the Whigs as you'd put 'My Curse' on a tape for me along with Rex 'Nothing Is Most Honorable Than You'. Ahh, tape days make me all dewy-eyed even though they were shit.
